The scientific and scientific-organizational activities of the Institute of Control Systems in 2022 were demonstrated at the exhibition of scientific achievements of DPMTS
23.01.2023 /On January 18, 2023, a mobile meeting of the Presidium of ANAS was held to discuss the annual report of the Division of Physical, Mathematical and Technical Sciences (DPMTS).
The event showcased the scientific achievements of scientific institutions that are part of the DPMTS, including the Institute of Control Systems (ICS), in 2022.
The scientists of the institute carried out relevant research in the scientific areas identified for 2022. The results of research work in the main scientific areas of the Institute, such as theoretical and applied problems of control, artificial intelligence technologies and the study of socio-economic systems, were introduced in various organizations of the country.
For example, the Institute developed intelligent control systems based on international standards such as SCADA on the basis of Internet of Things, an on-board computer for special-purpose unmanned aerial vehicles, a flight controller, special communications, a flight control system and related software, natural language technologies based on artificial intelligence for languages with limited digital resources and their applications, and other potential projects.
In the reporting year, a control system based on the SCADA model and the Internet of Things (IoT) was developed and implemented for the first time at the wells of the Bibi-Heybat field of the Azneft PA. At present, the SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system, which is widely used in the oil industry, is used in many areas of the economy, and is also successfully implemented in the power system and electrical networks. This system, which is a product of the institute, has become widely used in the oil industry. SCADA systems, automatic control systems built and programmed on the basis of computer databases, prioritize the solution of cybersecurity problems in the development and implementation of operational automation and information management systems.
Last year, the Institute carried out the development of control systems for unmanned aerial vehicles for various purposes, submitted to the competition of research programs of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences. Scientists of the Institute created a control system for unmanned aerial vehicles and an on-board computer that implements this system. It is planned to conduct observations and map the liberated territories with the help of unmanned aerial vehicles.
During the past year, the Institute of Control Systems implemented the project ""Development of intelligent information and query system for call centers". Important applied research was carried out, such as natural language processing, which plays an important role in solving complex and hard-to-formalize problems, and a robot operator developed on the basis of the Azerbaijani language, which is currently at the stage of experimental testing in several call centers. It is planned to solve the problem of recognition, understanding and synthesis of the Azerbaijani language based on natural language technologies on the basis of artificial intelligence for languages with limited digital resources, and implementation in relevant areas, including in robotic call centers, education (robot tutor, virtual learning), etc.
The institute also created a system for building ICT components based on the “smart village” platform for the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Azerbaijan and successfully implemented in the village of Agali, Zangilan District. The main goal of the concept is to reduce operating costs, improve living standards and provide the population with high-speed Internet. In the village of Agali, modern urban planning standards were applied. Factors such as smart street lighting, the construction of heat- and cold-resistant ecological houses, household waste management, and the installation of solar panels are integral parts of this concept.
Last year, the Institute carried out work on the development of algorithms for calculating estimates of high-order statistical noise characteristics, a methodology for modeling abruptly changing modes that disrupt the functioning of systems in a wide range and cause instability, the study of inverse source problems for parabolic equations with non-local beginning and boundary conditions, etc., on the basis of research, important scientific results were obtained. The obtained important scientific results are indexed in authoritative international databases such as Web of Science, Scopus.
In 2022, 299 articles by employees of the Institute were published (84 in the Web of Science databases and 56 in the Scopus databases), 214 abstracts, 2 books (2 abroad), 5 textbooks and 5 monographs (1 abroad), and 2244 references to their works were made.- 2 issues of the journal “Informatics and Control problems” were published.
During the year, the results of 7 research works were successfully implemented practically in various areas at the Bibi-Heybat field of the Azneft PA, in the village of Agali in Zangilan District, at the State Examination Center, the National Academy of Aviation and other state agencies. Extrabudgetary funds in the amount of 300,000 manats were received from the research work of the Special Design Bureau operating under the Institute.
A total of 7 patents were obtained in 2022, 6 of them Eurasian and 1 national, and a total of 7 projects had been submitted by the employees of the Institute to grant project competitions: 6 within the "Main Grant Contest - 2022" announced by the Science Fund of Azerbaijan and 1 within the joint program under the cooperation agreement signed between the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences and the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK).
In 2022, the projects "Improvement of UAV monitoring methods to ensure sustainable development and security environment in the liberated territories", "Development and introduction of intelligent Internet of Things (IoT) system for the development of agriculture in the liberated territories" and "Development of artificial intelligence national standards", implemented under the management of employees of the Institute, were selected as the winners of the grant competition "Karabakh is Azerbaijan!" announced by the Science Foundation of Azerbaijan on August 19, 2021. ICS scientists also became winners of the joint project of the "Mobility for Students and Staff of Universities" of the ERASMUS+ program (Action KA171), submitted in February 2022.
ICS successfully develops highly qualified personnel potential. In 2022, 4 dissertations for the degree of Doctor of Science and 6 dissertations for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy were successfully defended in the doctoral and dissertation programs to prepare Doctors of Sciences and Doctors of Philosophy, of the Institute, and 5 dissertations for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy were completed for submission to the defense. Of the 198 researchers working at the institute, 35 are Doctors of Science (2 Full Members of ANAS, 4 Corresponding Members of ANAS) and 47 are Doctors of Philosophy.
During the reporting year, cooperation with domestic and international scientific institutions was expanded, 6 international conferences and 1 scientific session were organized by the Institute. A number of scientists of the Institute were invited to give lectures at many educational institutions of the republic and abroad, scientific research was carried out, and scientific works were published.
Practical science popularization measures were also taken at the ICS, the official pages of the institute in various social media (Facebook, YouTube, etc.) and the official website www.isi.az were active, positive development dynamics for 2022 was observed. Last year, 1256 news, 88 announcements were posted on the Institute's website and the pages of scientists were updated. 39239 visits to the site were registered, the page was viewed 121103 times. There were 10,707 direct visits to the site, 21,067 visits from Google, 4,905 visits from social networks, and 2,560 visits from referral sites. On the website, which has been actively functioning since 2010 and fully meets the requirements for ANAS web pages, information is promptly covered in Azerbaijani, English and Russian.
