Azerbaijani scientists developed an earthquake warning system

23.09.2011 / Conferences, assemblies

Intelligent monitoring system of earthquake forecasting developed by the Cybernetics Institute of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences will allow detection of focuses and coordinates of earthquakes in the future. Director of the Institute Telman Aliev shared the news at the ‘Development Prospects of Modern Information and Communication Technology’ International Science and Technology Conference in Baku on Thursday. According to Dr. Aliyev, the system based on noise analysis allows one to predict an earthquake within a radius of 300-400 km 5-20 hours in advance. ’There are four such stations operating in Azerbaijan at the present time. They are located at Qum Island, in Siazan, Shirvan and Naftalan. The main server, to which information is sent, is located at the Cybernetics Institute, and another two servers are located at the Ministry of Emergency Situations and the Ministry of Communication and Information Technologies of Azerbaijan. Application of those four stations will allow Azerbaijan to ensure its seismic safety, making it possible to determine not only the time of earthquake but also its coordinates,’ Telman Aliev said.

He also said that estimation of earthquake intensity was to become possible in the future. The corresponding work is in progress at the present time and some positive results have been obtained. The Institute prepared the document titled ‘Monitoring system of seismic safety’, which will be submitted to the government for consideration. According to Dr. Aliev, several earthquakes with magnitude of 2-3 points are registered in Azerbaijan every month. Suspended oil wells of SOCAR (State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic) are used for analysis of seismic phenomena. Sensors installed in the wells have a direct connection with the server located in the building of the Institute, which allows receiving real-time data on wind velocity, pressure, temperature, etc. The data is transformed into signals, which are later forwarded to the control center through a radio channel. Each signal has certain noise in them, which allows one to analyze anomalous phenomena.
