Tamilla Nasirova, the first woman Professor of Mathematics in Azerbaijan, turned 85 years old

20.10.2021 / Conferences, assemblies

October 20, 2021 marks the 85th birthday of Tamilla Hilal Nasirova, the first woman mathematician, Doctor of Sciences and Professor in Azerbaijan, Head of Laboratory of the Institute of Control Systems, Honored Teacher, famous scientist in the field of probability theory.

Tamilla Nasirova graduated from school No. 176 of Baku city with a gold medal in 1953 and entered the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of Azerbaijan State University without examinations in the same year. After graduating from Azerbaijan State University in 1958, she started her academic career at the Institute of Cybernetics (now Control Systems) of ANAS on assignment, and in the same year she was admitted to the target postgraduate course at the Institute of Mathematics of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences. Later, she started working on her thesis at the Department of Probability Theory of Lomonosov Moscow State University under the supervision of Academician B.V. Gnedenko.

In 1964, she defended her Candidate’s dissertation at Tashkent University, and in 1994, she defended her dissertation "Some Issues of Queuing Theory" for the degree of Doctor of Sciences at the Institute of Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (under the scientific supervision of Acad. A.V. Skorokhod). In 1997 she was awarded the academic title of professor.

From 1958 to 1980 she worked at the institute as a laboratory assistant, researcher, senior researcher. Since 1980 she has been an associate professor at Baku State University, and since 1995 she has been working as a professor.

Since 1994, she returned to the Institute of Cybernetics and works as a senior researcher (part-time), and since 2003 as the head of the laboratory.

The theoretical results obtained by T.H. Nasirova were reflected in the theories of reliability, resource management, queuing and insurance, etc.

T.H. Nasirova is a well-known scientist in the field of probability theory. She first proved the ergodic theorem for semi-Markov processes, developed a method for finding the distribution of a process and its boundary functionals based on the study of semi-Markov processes and established a connection between three different types of semi-Markov processes.

T.H. Nasirova has created her own school of probability theory in Azerbaijan and conducts extensive scientific research. She created a method for studying semi-Markov walks in a certain class of distributions. This method allows to solve important issues of national economy unambiguously.

She has published important results in this field in foreign journals and conference proceedings held abroad. She is the author of more than 100 scientific papers, including 3 monographs, 2 books and 1 guidebook.

She has been engaged in pedagogical activity since 1964. In 2007, she was awarded the honorary title "Honored Teacher".

She worked as a professor at Karadeniz Technical University in Türkiye from 1996 to 2000 and left a positive mark with her research and teaching activities.

Under his supervision, 2 DSc and 10 PhD were defended.

Information about T.H. Nasirova is in the books "Outstanding Women of Azerbaijan", "100 Outstanding Scientists of Azerbaijan", in the 1st volume of mathematical-historical essay "Women Mathematicians" published in Russia, and in 2009 Tamilla Nasirova was devoted to the program "The First" on Azerbaijan TV ("The First Doctor of Mathematical Sciences").

T.H. Nasirova's name was included in the encyclopedias "Mathematicians of Azerbaijan in the XX century" and "Outstanding Scientists of Azerbaijan".

T.H. Nasirova was a member of the Expert Council of the Higher Attestation Commission under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, dissertation councils operating at the Institute of Control Systems and the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics, and is currently a member of the Dissertation Council on the specialty "Probability Theory" of the Institute of Applied Mathematics of BSU.

We congratulate Tamilla Nasirova, a well-known scientist who has made a significant contribution to world science, on her 85th birthday and wish her good health and new successes!
