Delegation of the Institute of Control Systems took part in an international summit

18.11.2024 /

The World Space Leaders Summit, organized by the Space Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan (Azerkosmos), was held in Baku on November 6, 2024 within the framework of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29). Delegations of aerospace companies and state enterprises from 40 leading countries of the world, including the Institute of Control Systems of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan, participated in the summit. The event included discussions on the types of activities meeting COP29 requirements in the field of environmental protection, and the agreement “COP29 Impact and Output: International Pledge for Space-Based Climate Action” was approved.

Director General of ICS, Academician Ali Abbasov, who was a plenary speaker at the panel session “From Space to Earth: Data-Driven Decision Making in a Changing Climate” within the framework of the event held under the chairmanship of Azerkosmos, spoke about the application of space and satellite technologies in Azerbaijan in the direction of solving problems related to global climate change. A.Abbasov spoke in detail about the work done in this area over the past ten years, Azerbaijan's cooperation with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and China National Aerospace Administration (CNSA), as well as participation in global initiatives.

Speaking about the work carried out by Azerbaijani scientists in the field of environmental protection, A.Abbasov talked about the integration of satellite technologies such as remote sensing, artificial intelligence-driven models and IoT devices that provide data for various sectors of data-driven decision-making. He said that our country is currently developing and implementing intelligent control systems that address global agricultural challenges by combining fuzzy logic and neural networks with satellite data. Earth Observation (EO) technologies play a key role in utilizing space-based data to monitor and predict the effects of climate change at local, regional, and global scales. These technologies provide large-scale and accurate information that can help countries, including Azerbaijan, to assess the existing problems.

A.Abbasov talked about the Digital Silk Road project, a transformative network of fiber-optic cables connecting Europe and Asia via the Black Sea, Anatolia, Caucasus, Caspian Sea and Central Asia. The academician also informed the participants of the event about the application of LIDAR technology by the National Aviation Academy of Azerbaijan for remote sensing of water surface pollution caused by oil and gas production.

At the end of his speech, emphasizing the importance of holding the COP29 in our country, A.Abbasov talked about the upcoming environmental protection challenges.
