Academician Ali Abbasov: Artificial intelligence opens new pages in the development of artistic creativity

General Director of the Institute of Control Systems (ICS) of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Academician Ali Abbasov said this at the event dedicated to the Science Day of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) and the life and work of the Chairman of the Writers' Union, People's Writer Anar.
At the event, A. Abbasov presented the portrait of writer Anar created at the Institute of Control Systems with the help of ChatGPT and virtual assistant based on the model of national language by artificial intelligence methods, as well as the short story “The Last Passenger” created on the basis of his works. The short story composed using deep learning was also narrated by an AI-generated voice of the writer.
In his speech entitled “Role of artificial intelligence in artistic creativity”, the academician spoke about the development of artificial intelligence technologies, which are rapidly spreading into all areas of human life in the modern era, and their influence on various fields of science, and especially literature. Emphasizing that the development of artificial intelligence technologies is given special priority in Azerbaijan, the scientist spoke about the tasks arising from the “Artificial Intelligence Strategy of the Republic of Azerbaijan for 2025-2028” approved by the Decree of President Ilham Aliyev dated March 19, 2025.
Speaking about the positive and negative aspects of the application of artificial intelligence technologies in literature and art, A. Abbasov pointed out that there is currently a considerable demand for works created with the aid of artificial intelligence all over the world. However, one of the noteworthy nuances here is the prevention of economic, social, ethical and literary threats to writers and poets. For example, the ongoing creation of texts of various genres by artificial intelligence can lead to the violation of copyright and intellectual property rights. That is, artificial intelligence algorithms are trained on existing texts, resulting in the creation of texts that are a compilation of existing styles and ideas, without an original vision or unique authorial voice. Readers becoming accustomed to texts created by artificial intelligence can lead to a decline in interest in more complex, in-depth, and experimental literature.
А. Abbasov also spoke about the application of artificial intelligence in the field of literary criticism, one of the main areas of literary studies. He said that traditional methods of literary criticism cannot be effective in evaluating texts created by artificial intelligence. Analyzing and evaluating literature created with the development of artificial intelligence requires new tools and approaches.
The academician noted that artificial intelligence is expected to surpass humans in the next decade, and that the development of autonomous artificial intelligence systems may lead to the fact that the decisions they make will be beyond human control. Thus, digital conflicts may arise between the subjects of autonomous artificial intelligence systems and human-controlled systems in the virtual world, which may escalate into a global information war.
The academician emphasized that despite all these threats, the application of artificial intelligence technologies in literature creates great opportunities for writers and poets to generate new ideas, overcome the writer's block, improve translation tools, discover new methods and analyze large volumes of texts. Therefore, it is necessary that representatives of the literary community actively participate in the discussion of ethical and practical issues related to the development of artificial intelligence, realizing the potential threats, in order to protect the value of human creativity and ensure its future development. Speaking about the upcoming tasks to address the above-mentioned problems, A. Abbasov stressed the importance of implementing joint projects in this field by the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences and the Writers' Union.
