
A meeting with representatives of the University of Thessaly, Greece, was held at the Institute of Control Systems

A meeting with representatives of the University of Thessaly, Greece, was held at the Institute of Control Systems (ICS) of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan on May 30, 2025. The meeting was attended by General Director of ICS Academician Ali Abbasov, Head of the Laboratory of Recognition, Identification, and Optimal Decision-Making Methods, Corresponding Member of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, Professor Kamil Ayda-zade, Professor of the Department of Environmental Sciences of the School of Technology at the University of Thessaly Providas Efthymios, and other staff members.
The main purpose of the meeting was to discuss the project “Mobility of Students and Faculty of Higher Education Institutions,” submitted by ICS and the University of Thessaly to the European Commission's ERASMUS+ academic mobility grant program (Action KA171) and included in the list of winning projects.
First, Academician Ali Abbasov spoke about the fundamental scientific research and projects carried out at the institute in accordance with the requirements of global technological challenges, and discussed the important scientific results achieved in the field of optimization and modeling this year. The academician also told the guests in detail about the Special Design Bureau (SDB) operating at the institute, which acts as a link between science and production.
Noting that Azerbaijan has been playing an active role in the implementation of transnational projects of international scale in recent years, A. Abbasov spoke about the targeted policy currently being pursued by the head of state in this direction. Speaking about the results of the official visit of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Ilham Aliyev, to the People's Republic of China in terms of improving transport infrastructure, the academician said that the next step in the “One Belt, One Road” economic development strategy is the digitalization of corridors.
Speaking about the existing cooperative ties between the Institute of Control Systems and various leading research institutes around the world, including the Institute of Aerospace Information Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the China National Space Administration (CNSA), and Guangzhou University, A. Abbasov emphasized the prospects in this direction and spoke about the importance of establishing cooperation ties with the University of Thessaly in ongoing projects.
At the end of his speech, A. Abbasov spoke about the opportunities for developing cooperation between Azerbaijan and Greece in the scientific and educational sphere and made proposals regarding the cooperation agreement to be signed between ICS and the University of Thessaly.
Professor Providas Efthymios then spoke in detail about the scientific research, publishing activities, and grants currently being carried out at the University of Thessaly. He gave a positive assessment of the existing cooperation between the scientific institution he represents and the Institute of Control Systems.
Highly praising the fundamental scientific research conducted by the ICS's Laboratory for Recognition, Identification, and Optimal Decision-Making Methods headed by Professor Kamil Ayda-zade, P. Efthymios spoke about the research being conducted jointly with researcher Rustam Azimov, who was sent to Greece for two months as part of the laboratory's “Mobility for Students and Faculty of Higher Education Institutions” project, covering 2022-2025. He voiced his proposals on the application in Azerbaijan of the results of research aimed at diagnosing farmland plots and eliminating existing problems using drones.
The meeting also discussed the 6th International Conference on Problems of Cybernetics and Informatics (PCI 2025), which will be held in Baku on August 26-28 this year, jointly organized by the two organizations, and proposals were made regarding a cooperation agreement to be signed in the near future.
