“We must support students as much as possible so that the pandemic, as well as various difficulties, do not negatively affect their lives and goals. Who knows, maybe in the future they will become soldiers of their chosen profession and will serve their country and people with dignity. Perhaps they are the heroes of the future. Just like today's heroes - doctors, police, teachers, soldiers ... "
"Happiness or unhappiness of any nation depends on how children are brought up," said the great teacher Hasanbek Zardabi, addressing not only parents, but also teachers, because teachers raise children for the homeland and persons for the society.
Our vis-a-vis is a young researcher of the Institute Lamiya Najafova, one of the heroines of the day. Heroism is the best trait of human nature, and in some cases, it manifests itself at some point. During these challenging days, she gives free online university prep intensive math classes to over 50 students in grades 9, 10, and 11 across the country. Lamiya is one of the teachers who tirelessly educate their students in the spirit of patriotism during the pandemic.
Let's try, through her words, to feel the interaction between a young teacher and students during the pandemic.
Please introduce yourself to our readers.
I, Najafova Lamiya Hamza gizi, was born in Khatai district of Baku on June 14, 1995. In 2012, I graduated from secondary school No. 165 of Khatai district and was accepted to the Baku State University, specialty "Mathematics", with a score of 601 points. I graduated with honors from the Master's studies program of the Institute of Control Systems of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences with a Master's degree in Information Technology and was accepted to the dissertation program.
I am a teacher at the Baku State University and a researcher at ICS ANAS. I am also the Deputy Chairman of the Council of Young Scientists and Specialists of the Institute. I am the author of 10 research papers, including proceedings of various national and international conferences.
The pandemic led to the beginning of a new stage in education - distance learning. During this time, to the best of our knowledge, you, as a teacher, support the students in their project. What are your thoughts about this?
The period of the pandemic has not gone unnoticed in many areas. Various professions, especially doctors, teachers, police, have supported people during this emergency and continue to do so...
With the beginning of quarantine, like many teachers, I began distance classes with groups that I taught at the Baku State University. I have already mastered distance learning skills. In addition, I tried to better organize classes, because I have the skills to use information and communication technologies in education. I decided to share my distance learning experience with a large number of students, to conduct intensive online math lessons for high school students who are behind in their studies, have financial difficulties and cannot prepare for university entrance exams for various reasons.
Could you tell us more about this initiative?
I thought that I should not teach only university students. I also need to support high school students who are trying to enroll in their chosen specialties.
Who knows, maybe in the future they will become soldiers of their chosen profession and will serve their country and people with dignity. Perhaps they are the heroes of the future. Just like today's heroes - doctors, police, teachers, soldiers...
I thought social media is the best platform for me to reach out to more families and students. To do this, I wasted no time sharing on social networks in various groups my announcement "Free Intensive Distance Learning in Mathematics." I especially addressed students who missed classes during quarantine, could not prepare, had financial difficulties and in any case wanted to study mathematics. As a result, I was contacted by students from different regions wishing to join the classes. I got to know each student and listened to their stories. As a result, I started my math classes with several groups, divided into levels based on questions and answers.
What were the interest and the opinion of social media users?
I received very positive feedback on my project from various professionals, parents, especially teachers, intellectuals and scientists.
I was even more inspired by the interest in and support for this small project. Thanks to this small project, I became a teacher of over 50 students living in 11 different regions of the country, from the front-line regions and remote mountain villages. We have one goal with them: to move forward and rise higher! I am very glad that I made a small contribution to the path to the goal of these students who will become heroes of the future. I will always try to support them as best I can! It's enough that they want to learn.
What were the interesting moments with regard to your announcement?
I have left applications from students and parents open for a certain period of time. There were too many people wishing to sign up for classes. Of course, since I was alone, I had to choose a limited number of students. After the application deadline, one student wrote to me that he was now aware of the initiative and wanted to take advantage of the free lessons. Unfortunately, I had to say that I would only work with a certain number of students, and they were disappointed. I said that if I could I would add them to the class. After a while, a message on a page with a large number of followers on social networks caught my attention.
It said: “I am 16 years old, and I am starting grade 11 this year. I want to get a high score and go to university. But my family can't help me with preparation courses and support. I hope you can help me, at least in part."
That appeal impressed me a lot. I thought that this person, unlike many of their peers, was interested not in bicycles, expensive mobile phones, cars, but in reading and education, and I welcomed this. I contacted the page admin and said that the student could contact me. When they contacted me, it was with a sinking feeling that I learned this was the same person whose application I had previously rejected. This student joined our class... and there were many such stories. I was once again convinced of the need for such initiatives, especially during the quarantine period.
Where does your passion for teaching come from and what motivates you?
In "Followers", a book about hardworking students, there was an article, "Being a Teacher Is a Certain Idea." The author could be writing about me. It was my childhood dream to be a follower of my teachers. In my opinion, teacher is the best profession. It is teachers who raise heroes of any age and every hero.
What kind of atmosphere did the fighting on the front line create for you and your students?
We bow our heads before the souls of our martyrs!
As a young person of Karabakh origin, I always try to instill in my students the spirit of patriotism. During this period, I encouraged students to work harder in the classroom and become worthy soldiers of the profession they will choose in the future. Because everyone should try to serve their country and people with their profession.
What would you like to say to our readers in the end?
My project is also a kind of appeal. I believe that our young teachers will have many such initiatives. We once learned from our heroic teachers and are still learning. It's time to share your knowledge. We must support students as much as possible so that the pandemic and various difficulties do not negatively affect their lives and goals.
Do you consider yourself one of today's heroes?
I wouldn't say a hero... Every citizen must work for the independence and development of their country, to serve the people and the Motherland with their profession. I try to fulfill my civic duty!
This project is dedicated to the memory of the heroic martyrs who gave their lives for the independence and sovereignty of the country...
